Ah, after your observation Erin, Duddahs wonders if there are any hidden scenes of the giant squid in any of the HP films.
Ok, Duddahs thought for today for sure.

hmmm...I don't think we do! We see the merpeople, and the grindlylows...but I don't think they ever show the squid.

They had the word snitch in my morning paper crossword today. It made me wonder, does anyone know where JKR got the idea for the name golden snitch? The only way I think of snitch is someone who is a tattletale?

Oh the Snitch dilemma, how Duddahs remembers the many theories surrounding this choice of titles by JKR. Duddahs has to admit that he loves the Sniglet bird explanation put forward by J. K. Rowling but he still feels that there was something unsaid and unexplained in her explanation of the origins of the Golden Snitch.
Great thought for any day fangsfan1

Thank you Duddahs. Never heard that story about the sniglet bird, I always find out something new when I come here.

My Harry Potter thought for today;
Did Hagrid grow plants from seeds provided by the Greenhouses at Hogwarts or did Hagrid provide the Greenhouses with their magical plants?

My thought for the day-if Lupin says in POA that the patronus spell is so difficult, how come so many students in OOP were able to master it? I wonder if the answer is because Harry was such a great teacher-and also took the time to be patient and encourage them all to keep trying til they got it.

Duddahs Harry Potter thought for today;
Why did the movies not include the Troll or Snapes protection rooms leading to the final room containing the mirror of Erised? It totally throws off one of the major ties to the number 7 in the Potter series.

I had forgotten the troll was not shown in that scene. That was one of the main reasons Quirrell was chosen, because he had a "way with trolls." I agree Duddahs, and I would have loved to see Snape's contribution too.

Duddahs thought for today;
Do you believe that the Leaky Cauldron may have been a vacation destination for some witches and wizards so that they could shop in Diagon Alley, much like the Orlando Theme Park? If so, do you think that one day one of the real Harry Potter theme parks will offer a Leaky Cauldron hotel accommodations?

My thought for the day, I wonder if there are many people who have watched all the movies but never read the books? Also I wonder if people watched the movies first and decided to try the books later, I wonder which they thought was best? I know usually when people read a book first, they always think it's better than the movie.

Also I wonder if people watched the movies first and decided to try the books later, I wonder which they thought was best? I know usually when people read a book first, they always think it's better than the movie. My husband is not a book reader, but has seen all of the movies, and enjoys them. He often has them on when Freeform has a weekend. He also knows a lot of the differences between the books and movies...because I tell him! There are a few spots where he has said that he thinks the book version makes so much more sense...like in HBP, when Harry just stays below while Snape kills Dumbledore. When I told him how it happened in the books, he said that it just made so much more sense that way. For me, I had seen the first movie at a neighbor's house, and I thought it was cute. Then, I saw POA in the theater, and thought it was such a great story, that maybe I should read this kids' series! LOL I read all the books that were out at the rime (the first 4), and was hooked. To me, the books were great. I thought those first movies matched fairly well...but preferred the books. I can remember reading the first and third, and thinking...OH! now I understand that scene! etc. I generally prefer the books. Erin

I think I agree that there are things in the book that make more sense than the movie. I am one who usually likes the books better but I do also love the HP movies. I think one of the biggest thing for me that makes the movies so enjoyable is that they did such a fantastic job of casting so many of these roles-lots of times the actor seems perfect for the character to me.

I'm going to post my thought before I backread or else I'll forget what I'm thinking. LOL. My Harry Potter thought for the day.... I was watching Freeform Potter weekend this past weekend, very closely (well as much as I could.) Then I got to thinking about the Basilisk. We all know how Slytherin put it there. Also, how he was the only one who could control it because he was a parcelmouth. Then there's the fact that WE only saw it after it was there for AGES, so it was very huge. First thought.... Was he going to use a Basilisk to sift out his unwanted students from the school BEFORE he suddenly decided to leave the school? In my mind's eye, he probably left the unhatched egg there to hatch right before he left or perhaps a little baby Basilisk there before he left, preparing for the future for his return or for his heir's to come to the school some day. But here's my big thought for SECOND.... I've always thought about this but never remembered this when it came to writing it down. Here's a creature that is so large it could swallow a person whole. I even got that impression from the books. Why would it just kill with it's eyes? Wouldn't all of it's food be too hard to swallow if it petrified everything that saw it? Then with all of this time that had passed, I know Myrtle and Ginny it would have done as instructed and petrified them because Tom Riddle was right there to tell it to do that, but what about Justin, Hermione, and that girl? Was Tom Riddle right there too instructing it to petrify? Hermione's mirror missed that, but then again, that was a tiny mirror. Then Tom being so far from Myrtle's bathroom is really taking a chance. Lot's to think about. Here's a thought.... I'm still getting my thoughts wrong. The Basilisk's instructions while going through the pipes were to KILL KILL KILL. But by using it's eyes.... not by biting/eating. ================================= I've ALWAYS looked for the giant squid. I wished so, but I can't recall any scenes. Oh this is cool! I was thinking about this same scene this weekend too. Something I noticed for the first time that I've watched the first film and never realized before. I was telling someone in the room that I wished they had put in those very scenes you mentioned then watched as the flames we've always seen flare up behind Harry when Quirrell is trying to get the stone from him. Then it hit me... in the book that flame is caused ONLY because of Snapes potion challenge. You have to have the proper potion to drink to be able to get back through! So! In a small way they did! I was totally shocked that it's taken me what? ? 17 YEARS to see that!

Duddahs thought for today;
Duddahs wonders if JK Rowling celebrates a different day for Harry Potters 20th anniversary than the rest of us did. Seeing as she actually met Harry Potter long before the book was first released and she also read the book long before its release date.
Hmmm?

My thought for the day-Did the Bloody Baron ever have any real conversations with the Slytherins, the way Nick did with the Gryffindors?

Ooh, I wonder what sort of discussions all of the house ghosts might have ad with ear charges. We know that the. Grey Lady spoke with Luna Lovegood but how about the other students.

Are there things you can't ask a house-elf to do? They do have some magic beyond what a wizard can do, but we know that Kreacher was asked to destroy the locket horcrux, and couldn't, because of the powerful magic on it, that even a house elf couldn't overpower with just magic. Also, I'm guessing you can't ask one to rob Gringotts for you...otherwise, that would have been so much easier for the trio, than teaming up with Griphook. Gringotts has its own magical protection, and I'm sure that the house elves magical ability was covered in their magical enchantments (and this was neglected in the Malfoy Manor basement). But what about things not specifically protected from house-elf ability? Could you ask a house elf to murder someone? Make someone fall in love with you? What if you had empathy for your house elf, and told them to go on a week long vacation to relax....could they do that? Are there things you could ask a house elf to do, that they cannot comply with?

Duddahs thought for today; Do you believe that the Leaky Cauldron may have been a vacation destination for some witches and wizards so that they could shop in Diagon Alley, much like the Orlando Theme Park? If so, do you think that one day one of the real Harry Potter theme parks will offer a Leaky Cauldron hotel accommodations? Maybe not so much a vacation spot, but as someone who has a tradition with girlfriends to go on a yearly shopping weekend, I would think that people would spend a night or two there. I'm not sure wizards had a lot of hotels/inns, since traveling is easy, and sleeping at home is cheaper/more comfortable. I guess they would for specific vacation destinations...as we see when the Weasleys went to Israel...I'm assuming they stayed there for the week, because of the distance...apperating great distances has it's set of dangers, and I'm not sure about the flu network connections between different nations. Also, when major events are happening, like the Quidditch World Cup, where hundreds of thousands of wizards are traveling...they can't have them all apperating and portkey-ing at the same time (which begs the question...what happens if two wizards try to apperate/portkey to the same exact spot at the same time?). There was no flu network, and if you fly in on brooms, I would expect you'd need a good map before the match. Hence, the huge campsite made sense. But I think that most wizards who would go to Diagonal Alley wouldn't necessarily need to be there overnight. Wizards traveling from very far away probably have their own wizard shopping places, closer to them. Okay...I've made this a lot broader...so to get back to your post. I would LOVE for there to be wizard centered hotel accommodations at Universal! We are hoping to go back sometime, and that would be just fantastic! Erin
