I know what you mean, book five was my fave but I notice a lot of people list it as their least favorite. It' interesting to read the polls when they have voting on favorite book and see how everyone has a different favorite. One thing I noticed is that after reading the whole series, I got a lot more out of the earlier books. I loved rereading them and picking up so many new things that I missed before-and that would link up the the latter books.

In my mind, no matter how good the books became, none will ever come as close to my minds eyes images from that very first book and what my son and I shared night after night before the movies were made, before the hype took full hold here in the US and before he grew up!
NOW that is REAL MAGIC!

Ok.... time for a new subject.
Now take a long hard look at yourself. Think of your situation in life... your age... family status... your career... education... how you precieve yourself... your strengths... your weaknesses. Now if you had to translate that over to the wizarding world meaning you are a witch or wizard.... Now that you have that in mind....
Join the Order of the Phoenix or not? (DA if you are of that age group.)

So...what do you think the other schools looked like? I'm going to search some pics, and find somesthing that I think could represent Beaubatons and Durmstrang. You find some, too!

I would want to join the OOP for sure. But being totally honest I think it would take a tremendous amount of courage-it would be terribly dangerous and put your family in danger. Then again, it would be just as dangerous to everyone if Voldemort took over. So i would join but I have to admit I would be scared! It's interesting thinking what the other schools would look like, I pictured Durmstrang as a big black forbidding looking building but never thought that much about Beauxbatons. Maybe it would look like some of beautiful French buildings you seen pictures of?

I too woiuld be scared.. but sometimes that can be a strength to give me adrenalin to push me forward to do the task Dumbledore would have me do.

OK...I'm picking this one for Beaubaton's i56.TP .com/345g2gp.jpg[/img] And though I know it's too small...this is kind of what I picture Durmstrang to be...cold and isolated...near water....just pretend that's a ship like the one in the GOF movie...LOL i53.TP .com/5ww0te.jpg[/img] I'd love to see others' ideas! That is so strange Erin, it makes so much sense that Durmstrang might be on the water.. For some reason, I saw it in my head as being Landlocked and looking like the medeval Dracula's Castle aka Vlad III The Impaler's Castle in Romania www.castlefiction.com/blogimages/draculas-castle.jpg

You know.... it's times like these you really get a teeny peek as to what it's like for movie makers to try to find something that is already exhisting and film it for something that was totally made up in an author's mind. I have an obsession of collecting calendars. I normally keep one up of Irish or Scottish castles. They are beautiful. Or European ones. I've been in far too many castles to be able to count. So really, knowing the different styles and knowing the description JKR gave us I had a perfect vision in my head as to what she might have been refeerring to when describing the other two schools. I've spent the last little while looking at so many beautiful castles and mansions. I've saved a collage and will explain later on tonight when I can post them. I've got to get my daughter to Karate tonight. I"m calling in sick tonight from work since I think my allergies have took a turn into something more. I'm going to the doctor in the morning. SO I'll be here tonight in between naps. SO... expect to see my vision posted here late tonight. Got to go.

I'm working on this right now. Sorry I didn't get it up last night. I'll have to resize the images when I get on my PC instead of my laptop. I just can't figure out my way around this new version of paint.
OH and I'm going to go to the doctor this morning. I did get rest last night which helped. Thanks.

8-)OK... first I think if I were to type in how I see these places in my own mind, this might help. See, when I look at the images I find, I see a piece of this image that fits, but there is something missing. Then I find what is missing on another image but it still does not have what the image before has. So, if I take this and that from each image, there you have how my mind precieves these places when I read the books. I'll post the images here in a bit that will go along with the description. DurmstrangFirst, I think of what Hermione said... that it must be a cold place by looking at the clothing they wear. Then it must be far up north. I always thought of cold and think ice, near blizzard like weather a lot of the time. Russia. Maybe it's cold there most of the year? In my mind, with them being taught the dark arts, I don't see them being located anywhere near muggles or any sort of town. (I only see Hogwarts being seculeded having the only wizarding town near it, so this means no town for Durmstrang.) I love the idea that Erin mentioned water for the ship to use. That really is perfect. I see that below the school. Much like Hogwarts will have a way to get there from the cave below the school think the little boats when the first years enter hogwarts, but theirs would have something less spectacular. Most military type castles are built high upon a hilltop due to needing a birdseye point of view to see the enemy coming. They need time to prepair for battle. And I most definately do see this to be a very strict military type school. Very rigid in their routines. I saw this more when I read the books, before GOF film came out. I also imagine thick, dark trees surrounding the school. Something like the Black Forest, which I know is not located in that country. Still, the snow covers a lot of this. I see it as being windy.. so the trees sort of breaks some of that from the land hillside surrounding the school. Yes the school must be high but nestled up top of the mountain so to remain hid from those who do not know where to locate it. SO... with that said... the description of the castle its self. I see it not near as glamorous as Hogwarts. Krum seemed to make that well known. My mind then leads me to think of those castles that have walls with lookout towers at the corners or stratigic points along the outside parimiter of the school. Very old looking. Cold and dark. i55.TP .com/xdax40.jpg[/img] i56.TP .com/smvxop.jpg[/img] BeaubatonI do not see it out in the country. I see it as being sort of in the middle of a French town... Paris? Maybe... someplace large. Still, I don't see they would have a Diagon Alley of their own... who knows maybe they do. I still see it near a place where the girls could shop. They seem so vain, or at least that is how I viewed the early Fleur as well as her Headmisstress. No way this place is in a rural town. I don't see it looking like a castle either. Yes elaborate grounds. Manucured lush green yards, with shaped trees and bushes. Flower gardens to make everyone envy them. Tall hedges to keep the muggles back a bit. To help hide them. OH yes a gate, so elegant with white stone walls holding black rought iron gates. Sometimes, I even think it might be more like how they hid Grimmuald Place, but really that does not seem practical for such a large building. (muggles would see an old run down, abandoned hospital or something the like.) I see not a castle but a large building... mansion. White or light colored really. Have any of you ever seen the X-Men movies? I see the inside looking much like that. Even the grounds... just not the actual appearance on the outside. i55.TP .com/2ahzk1d.jpg[/img]

See, even though we all read the same lines in a book, it is our own life's experiences that make what we see in our minds eye to created what we believe the author intended.
With my own life's references, having grown up vacationing in Newport RI where there are many Robber Baron period Mansions that they ridiculously referred to as Cottages, I see Harry Potter in a very different way than many people do.
Then there are those who grew up in Europe like Miss Charlotte who will see the books through completely different set of filters.
This is what makes us both so great as fans and so wonderful too!

Well, see most of this I learned in history class in school as well as I watch LOTS of documentaries. Then I love the psychology of the way people live due to job choices or family arrangements etc. Really, I've never been to Russia. I got these images offline. I've seen movies and such located there... Read Dracula and seen those films. I've never been to England, Ireland nor Scotland. I've always wanted to though. In Germany there are castles or left over castles all over the place. Some in big cities have been turned into museums. A wonderful place to go. Beautiful gardens, walks, trees, manicured hedges and fountains outside. Now I did live five minutes away from Frankenstein's castle. It was not really more than a walk through. Mainly you get an eerie feeling about the place. Although you do get a beautiful Birdseye view of Eberstadt, the town below. A twisty road that leads to it, but you really can't see it from the top of the castle. Well, as far up as you are allowed to go with safety. Still, this is not really my view of the other two schools.... well... Hmm??? Maybe, Wursburg and one I think was located in Frankfurt were the ones turned into museums with those gardens I spoke of.. Yeah, Over looked the Rhine river too. I guess, I do see what I used to explained as part of both schools could fit that experience. I was not even thinking about them but the memory must have bled through.

Speaking of schools...there's another wizarding school somewhere...it's mentioned in DDs notes after "The Fountain of Fair Fortune" in Beedle the Bard. It's called W.A.D.A. Wixarding Academy for the Dramatic Arts. Wonder where that one is...and what it looks like?!
