Oct 1, 2013 at 10:18pm Quote . Post Options . Post by misscharlotte on Oct 1, 2013 at 10:18pm I'm not really a fan of his.. but I loved The Shining film. Hmm? I wonder if the book is like the movie or how they differ? Anyway, Fangsfan, is Doctor Sleep something brand new? I've never heard of it before. From what you are saying that it's a sequal... it is very tempting that I might want to go ahead and start with the first book, then move to this one. What do you think of it so far? I really liked it Miss Charlotte. Yes it is a sequel to The Shining, the little boy in it is all grown up now. I am still rereading the Game of Thrones series (third go round). Also rereading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell which is about English magicians. I also got out my little book called Merry Christmas to You, which is filled with Christmas stories from many countries. I've posted about it before, this was the book my Mom got me for ten cents on a yard sale and it's one of my favorite things of all time. I looked at her writing inside and from the date I've had it for forty years now, I still get it out every year. Back when I got it there was no internet, now I have the fun of googling some of these authors and reading about their lives. I know isn't that cool? I've never read it, but the book Moby Dick, written by Meville... well, there is a movie being filmed right now that tells of the true life events which inspired him to write the book. I know it's cool to read about authors who have been sucessful at this medium. It's also cool to find out what inspired them in the first place. It's just strange to think that Jane Austen was one of JKR's favorite authors... I wonder how she might have used any of her books as inspiration when she wrote the Harry Potter series?

Am reading a book called The Christmas Chronicles that I got for Christmas. It's about the life of Santa Clause, very interesting so far. You've got me curious... Is this supposed to be a history of Santa Clause or a storybook? I always loved watching the world history documentaries of his life from all of the countries around the world I didn't see it on this year. Still, yours sounds like an interesting read. ====================== After I went to see the newest Hobbit movie, I had to go back and reread the book. I finished it in about a week. That is not my usual. So, that is what I've been doing during my down time. After I finished reading it, I went to see the film again and I started rereading the book again. I felt I missed something. Apparently, I must have slept some while I read it earlier last month, because whole sections completely skipped my mind. If not that, I guess I was too distracted that time, while my eyes just went over the words. I'm taking my time this time around to enjoy it. I can't wait until next year to see the third part. In the mean time, I'm hoping to really get into the Silmarilian and the other books written to go along with it. Peter Jackson and the writers for his Hobbit movies, are using the Appendicies that are found at the end of The Return of the King to give more of the story to the audience. He's also using this information to connect the dots more precisely from the Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I've been reading out of the Tolkien Companion and learning a lot of background that he created. It reminded me so much of how Rowling had so much background that she created to give herself a history for her writing.

It's fiction but I think based on some historical facts. That's interesting about The Hobbit, I was wondering how they could make three movies out of it, but this explains where they go t some extra material from.

It's fiction but I think based on some historical facts. That's interesting about The Hobbit, I was wondering how they could make three movies out of it, but this explains where they go t some extra material from. Yeah. I've had to put them down since I made that last post. (you know how life goes sometimes. It won't let you find time to read.) So, while out today, I was doing a bit of rereading just to catch up to where I was last in the Hobbit. At the same time I've taken with me my copy of The Return of the King so to read those Appendicies. I guess I always skipped over them since I was actually finished reading the Lord of the Rings it's self. Why read on? This stuff at the end is new to me and I'm loving it. I found a book on my bookshelf that I bought many years ago. I thought was my copy of the Silmarillion but it actually isn't. I love this one though, it's from a second hand bookstore, so I really need to be careful not to tear the old pages. It's called The Tolkien Companion. It really reminds me of the Harry Potter Lexicon but for the world of Middle Earth. Everything is in ABC order and covers everything from the books etc. I now have two more books I want to place on my wish list... yes having to do with what I've been talking about. I've never heard about it before until today. The History of the Hobbit Part One Mr Bagginswww.amazon.com/The-History-Hobbit-Part-Baggins/dp/0618968474#reader_0618968474The second one of course is: The History of the Hobbit Part Two Return to Bag-End www.amazon.com/History-Hobbit-Volume-Return-Bag-End/dp/0618969195/ref=pd_sim_b_1This is what Wikipedia has to say about these two books. Since these seem to be a bit out of my price range I think it will be later on this year before I would be able to get my hands on either copy. Still, I'm excited to. I wonder if these might be at my local library? EDITED: Oh this is driving me nuts. While looking for the links of the two books on my wish list I have found another. www.amazon.com/The-Annotated-Hobbit-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0618134700/ref=pd_rhf_dp_s_cp_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=17175HMMADFTP6163DG1This one sounds to be so fun to look through as well as read. *sighs*

Well I did it. Income tax money came in and since my local Barnes and Noble bookstore didn't have the three books I mentioned in my previous post on this thread... we ordered them for me online. I read the book covers of the two parts of The Hobbit Histories and a little bit of the first couple of pages of the introduction. I can't wait to dive into these books. They are a retelling of Tolkien's original way he intended The Hobbit to be. The version he told his children each night when he made up the story for them to enjoy. Of course it was an ongoing tale over many many years in the making. I'm most looking forward to reading about the differences from the published version that we all know and love. I always was sad that Thorin died in The Hobbit, and I know we have that to look forward to come December this year for part three of The Hobbit film series. I do see how it really was something Tolkien had to do for that character, however, in this History of the Hobbit book series I've learned by reading the introduction, that in his original version that he told his children Thorin actually does live. :|It also says that the Battle of the Five Armies didn't take place at the Lonely Mountain, but on Bilbo's journey home. The main dwarves were not a part of it. I can't wait to read all of this in it's original form. It makes me wonder how JKR might have done something like this if she had the time for the Potter series? The reason I can't start it right now, as I've mentioned on a few other threads today, I'm in the middle of a couple of television series marathons, at the moment. Not to mention family issues seem to be a bit hot... The pause button on that front has been pushed. I have no idea as to how long until the button is unpaused and we are right back in the middle of chaos again. So, my family are keeping me on my toes for the moment. Then a huge thing I'm going through is that my migrane medicine, that my doctor prescribed for me, seems to have quit working. He's put me on something else that is sedating me and I don't like it. It makes reading a bit hard, when I drop off asleep quite frequently. I quit taking it last night and went back to the old stuff he had me on. I don't like fighting sleep all of the time. I want a clear mind so I can read and understand and think while I'm enjoying a book. Once I get these things all worked out, these books will be opened. I decided not to put them on my bookshelf, so they will be out to remind me what I have to look forward to. I miss being able to allow my mind to soar so I look forward to it.

I haven't seen the movies yet, either. The closest I've come is our high school play, where I played Ori the dwarf. That was my first play in the Drama club, and I enjoyed it! Erin

Erin.... Now that I'm more familiar with each of the dwarves and who they are by site from the films... I love Ori! I found out that he was the one who fell down the well when they were in Moria at Balin's Tomb, in the Fellowship of the Ring. Ori was (in Peter Jackson's version) was the scribe. I wonder where he got that idea or if he was supposed to be that from what their research dug up? This particular version was really the complete manuscript of Tolkien's Hobbit in it's original form. I'd have to go look it up to see when THIS particular manuscript was published with the commentaries by this other guy who did tons of research to comment on where things changed from THIS to the one Tolkien published back (I think in 1937.) the one we already know. So really, there is only these two. Fangsfan.... I know, I can't wait until I get there. Gandalf used to always be my favorite character then Legolas would be next. Since I read the LOTR's trilogy several times, I know that book much better than the actual Hobbit book. I think this might be one of those books I will have to pick up and read at least once a year. Since the movie came out, I've lost count how many times I've seen it. Yep... just like I no longer could tell anyone how many times I've seen or read the Potter series. Thorin's my favorite and I think that might be it for good. Right now, I'm taking a SHORT break and hope to be back to reading these new books later this week. OH and the Hobbit part two The Desolation of Smaug's DVD/Bluray release is on the 8th of next month. I'm about to die to see the third film, come December. ..... Weirdly enough, I got started reading both of those books but then today I picked off my shelf one of my old Jane Austin books that I bought long ago but never got around of cracking open to read.... Northanger Abbey. My goodness, I'm hopeless aren't I?

I'm reading A Feast For Crows, my third go-round of the Game of Thrones series. Also rereading one of my favorites from years ago, The Once and Future King. It's funny because right after I decided to reread this book they showed the movie Camelot on tv, which was based on this book. And stars Richard Harris as King Arthur. Also about half through with The Book Thief which I love.

I'm reading a book called A Wolf Called Romeo which my aunt brought for me when she visited from CT. It's a true story about a huge black wolf in Juneau, Alaska who loved dogs and would visit them and became famous. Rereading A Dance with Dragons and after that may start a fourth go around of the George Martin books-shades of Harry Potter and the Many Rereads!

I was so shocked the other day. I found out that The Game of Thrones story is not finished. HE's still writing! I saw something on tv the other day, where his fans are beginning to get worried. Because of his age, and the fact he's slowed down his writing, they are afraid he's not going live long enough to finish the series. That would be horrible. Here I have the fourth book, thinking it was the last of the story, and I'd cut to that book to find out how it goes. EEEK!

Hey Miss C...there are 5 books currently out: A Game of Thrones A Clash of Kings A Storm of Swords A Feast for Crows A Dance with Dragons In the 4 seasons HBO has filmed, they have covered the first 3 books. I'm not sure how many more seasons they are planning to film. GRRM has been slowly working on the 6th book, and plans for there to be 7. He HAS told HBO what the general plot is going to be, so that if need be, they can finish the series without him writing them... At the rate he's writing, they're going to finish filming the whole thing before he finishes... But hopefully he will get some inspiration, and sit down and get it done! Cool Thanks for filling me in. Apparently, I thought I had the fourth book when in fact it's the Dance with Dragon's one. I still don't have HBO so I have not seen anything since the Stark family seems to have been hit hard. (tried to curb my words in case it might be a spoiler. LOL

I'm planning on going to the bookstore today some time. Last night, I watched an old Miss Marple episode on PBS. Turns out the book they are showing was cut in three parts for each episode to be aired. UGH! I can't wait that long to see the other two parts. So, 'A Murder Announced' is on my get list today. I already have my idea who the murder is. YAY!

I remember reading A Murder is Announced, it was a great book. It's funny, I've been going through stuff in my bedroom trying to declutter and just yesterday came across a lot of my Agatha Christie books. I really would like to start rereading them sometime this summer.

For some reason, it seems like everywhere I look there's something Agatha Christie related on.
They had a marathon of old movies this past Monday. I had them set to record, but the satellite kept going out because of thunderstorms.
Then about a week ago, TCM showed a movie with Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave called "Agatha". Turned out she went missing for a short period of time (about a week). No one ever knew why or where she went. She kept that a secret even to her death. This movie was someone's made up idea of what she might have done/gone during that time. So cool.
And I too have been feeling like reading the books I have not gotten to. I"m currently getting a LOT of my life in order to where I will have more down time so I can be here and to be able to read like I did in the old days.
HEY, if you have any particular book of hers you choose (if you do this summer) let me know, I might read it with you too... just for fun.

I think I saw some of that Agatha movie too. I also saw a lot of Miss Marple movies with Margaret Rutherford-didn't look anything like I pictured Miss M but she played her very well. And I will let you know Miss C, that would be so much fun to read a book together.

Just to let you guys know... if you hadn't already....
I remember back when the WB was still up and running, there was a conversation about the book/film To Kill a Mockingbird. I also recall several of our friends said that I have to watch it. I made mention that it was not something required reading in school after I saw some say it was for their education.
Well.... I just saw on the news that there's a sequal that is just now released. It's manuscript was hidden away all of these years.
I hope you guys enjoy.
