"If you don't believe things you'll never have any fun. The more things you can believe the more interesting life is, as you say yourself." "Old Grandmother" from the book Magic For Marigold by LM Montgomery, written in 1926! The quote made me think of HP fans. That does sound like us.

I bought this book called "The Help." I recommend this book. I can't type for long... So I'll comment more on this later today. In many ways it reminds me of if Hagrid wrote a book... Part of what makes this book so real is that the author used the type of speech that she uses in her every day life not proper english. It really brings a bit of realism to her story. I"m barely into the second chapter, but I did see the film and know much of what is to come. I'll comment on that on that thread.

I am currently reading the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin. I have read the first two and on the third one, A Storm of Swords. Just finished rereading DH. I want to start again reading SS but I think I may wait to see if I can get on Pottermore and rearead it that way.

Yesterday I went to the Book Barn, a wonderful used book place in Niantic CT. In the children's section I found two books I have wanted for ages-Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Quidditch Through the Ages. They also have lots of cats and one friendly black cat that followed us everywhere we went. Made me think of Miss Charlotte.

;D Yep.... I'm really that short. No really, it sounds like you are having fun. I"m so glad that you are finally getting those two books. I still have yet to read anything from the Quidditch book. And a tip... At first I just read the part of the Beast book where they list the creatures. It was a while later when I finally read the whole thing. It's better to do it that way... To read the whole thing from front cover to the back... even the little foot notes. There is so much history of the Harry Potter world that you really learn a lot more than just things about beasts. Well... from my point of view I have always seen Goblins and Centuars as peoples not beasts. (A problem I have to think about when playing on the 20 questions thread.) You know... after saying that I really need to do that with the QUidditch book. Who knows what I might learn besides Quidditch? Anyway, glad you are having fun.

Yes, I see what you mean about the goblins and centaurs, particularly Firenze who I thought was one of the bravest characters in the books. I love the comments from Ron throughout the Beast book. We went back a few days later to take pictures-the same black cat was there and followed us around again and seemed to remember us. I later noticed they had brochures made up with a description of all their cats-and it said this black cat loves to escort visitors around the premises!

Yay!!!!! For Books A Million comming to Fangsfan's area. Really, I love that store. One of my two favorites. I'm excited for my future in the fact that soon I'll have some relaxing time so I can finally READ a book again. *Dances around like Rumplestilskin around the bonfire!* Yep... one of my two happy dances. Fangsfan... Please do let us know what you think of the place once it opens. I do like Barnes and Noble first, but I was a regular at Books a Million for years before I found B&N. They often have good deals... AND as for my local store, they often have the books right in the store that I can't find at B&N without having to order for it to come in. At least in my Agatha Christie collection. It was at Books a Million that I went to the last three Harry Potter book release parties. A good friend of mine was the manager there... Hmm? I wonder if he's still with them these days. I have not talked to him in ages.

My sister and I went to North Conway, NH for a big shopping spree today. They have a small Books a Million that just opened-not as big as the one in Maine. We went in and I liked it very much-very much like the Borders that used to be there. I had never heard of these stores til I heard some people on the WB discussing them, so excited that they're coming here!

Went to the new Books A Million in Portland today. They had awesome Harry Potter stuff that I hadn't seen before. A Harry Potter chess set, Magic Eye HP books, games,, and a Harry Potter candy making kit. Very cool.

Oh yeah! The first time I ever saw the Sorting Hat in person was in their store. It was so cool! So they now have a Harry Potter Candy making kit? I'm going to have to go check it out. Thanks,

Those sound awsome! I did see a chess set at the HP Exhibition...but it was quite expensive ...$250. If I played chess, I can imagine I would desperately want that! If someday, I ever have a house with a cozy library for me (Which I would love!)..I would want that on display.
Now, for the thread topic. I just finished reading Sarah's key (and then found out that they have made a movie)! It was a very good book, about a journalist researching the French Vel' d'Hiv Roundup. It is a fictional story (thankfully, because the particulars of this one particular story she focuses in on would haunt me if it were true...though it is possible), but very well written.
Next for me, is "The Heretic's Daughter". It focuses on the Salem witch trials. I read an excerpt on Amazon, and it looked good! Now I just have to get to the library to borrow it!

Those sound good Erin, I've heard of Sarah's Key and heard other people say they liked it too. I don't play chess either but still wanted that chess set! I don't think it was that expensive though. It's hard going into book stores this time of year because I need to do Christmas shopping and I keep seeing things I want for myself instead!

Fangsfan... I KNOW what you mean. I collect wall and desk calenders and the best time to buy them is right now. Then I have that temptation to spend my money of my wants insteas of for Christmas presents. I actually have a Harry Potter chess set. But mine was the one that they came out with many many years ago. Looks like the one that we saw in the first film but of course much smaller. ;D Mine too was one found in the toy section of stores. It's heavy but not made from any medals. Definately not fancy like the one Erin mentioned. BUT Fangsfan.... I too love this set BUT can not play it since I don't know how. "The Heretic's Daughter".... I've heard of this name before, but did not know what it was about. Thanks Erin... it really sounds interesting. Please let us know what you think of it whenever you get the chance to read it. Sarah's Key? That too is one I've never heard of. It almost sounds scary by your discription.

Well, it's about an event that happened in France during the Holocost, which is in itself, pretty scary!

My 13 year old daughter told me that she is reading a book at school that she wants to buy for me. She's not allowed to bring it home so this was the only way I could read it. So... recently she talked her dad into taking her shopping. Barnes and Noble.. she knows the place I love to go shoping at. Then when I woke up she had a surprise for me. A book. Coast to Coast Ghosts by Leslie Rule. Now that I finally have my new reading glasses I'm looking forward to reading what I have not already. It seems pretty good. It's a collections of short stories. A lady and her mother went across the US in search for true ghost stories. I"m on page 34 and I'm finding them so interesting. I'm so used to the ones they highlight on tv documentaries etc. At least this is fresh meat... so to speak.

well...It's great to see this kind of thread here!! I LOVE to read...and my home bookcase has expanded. Last year I was lucky enough to go to a Border's book store, where I ordered a series of MERLIN books that were written in the UK, yes, they are based on the TV series of the same name, starring Colin Morgan and Bradley James, to name a few!! Cost me a pretty penny, but well worth it. I got 15 books. There are 2 books in the series that I am going to give to my nephew, who is old enough to read them, because those were for younger readers anyway.
Right now, I am reading a series of books by Jean Plaidy, about king Henry the 8th and his 6 wives. One is called "Murder Most Royal" about two of his wives, The other book is called THE SIXTH WIFE which I have not read before. Most enjoyable, since I just love royalty. There's a whole series of TUDOR novels , plus the queen Victoria novels, and other royalty. These books are fiction, but they draw very closely on the real events that happened.
And now I find out that my B and N bookstore has the doctor who books starring the 11th doctor!! there goes my budget.

I know what you mean... I think it's a good thing that I live about half an hour's drive away from my favorite two bookstores... (Barnes and Noble and Books A Million) They are right across the road from each other and both near the closest mall. So, every time someone in my family has to go to the mall, I HAVE to go to one of the bookstores. If I were not the mom... I would ask that they drop me off first but then I am the one who is driving. LOL. ANyway, every time I go into one of the bookstores, I can't help but find another book that I have on my wish list. I mean, I got up right now because it's quiet enough in my house that I can read.
Good luck MK and do tell us what you think about your books once you have finished with them.
Several years ago, there was a calendar that I wanted and the only one available was at a Borders Bookstore. I didn't think my state had one of those, but I found out we do... Right on the state line about a six hour drive away. I had to order it online from there.. but I got it.
