What a great owl story Miss C! I hope he's ok too. The blue herons are one of my favorite, Duddahs, on my facebook page there's a picture of one in the brook just a few feet from my house that my sister took. I usually don't see them after the cold weather starts though, I always thought they must be one of the birds that flew south.

You know, I have never paid attention to what time of year that I see them... I never thought about them migrating due to seasons... they just might be up there this time of year.
As for other birds... we have our Canadian Geese that flies overhead within their flocks. A few years ago they allowed hunting them for a brief time. Their numbers were causing troubles in town.. But to be honest, they are so beautiful that every time we see them while we are driving down the road, we always have to point up in the skies and tell the rest of us in the car to look... It's spectacular.
As for the Blue Herrons.... One of my old favorite Mahjong games had two default backgrounds to uncover during the game... one was of the Blue Herron standing in the water... So beautiful.

Oh, I know all about the Canada Geese being a problem.
For those who do not know, I am one of the commissioners for the Park that I live on. The small lake/huge pond which ever it is, has a walk way around the perimiter and all over the lower section of the park, creating a wonderful and very safe outdoor walking park created during the WPA in 1936.
We had so much trouble with the Canada Geese pooping massive amounts of green mess on the sidewalks that people actually were slipping in it and being injured. Several people sued the town and we were forced to take some action.
After much research by myself and another commission member, we came across the solution of having a very large water fountain/filtration device placed in the center of the pond. Due to it throwing the water about 35 feet up into the air in a wide mushroom shape, it causes great and constant ripples and sound to the surface of the water. This causes the geese in flight to not see the reflections that they are searching for to land and feed at, thus usually passing us by.
It works about 90 percent of the time and has very greatly reduced the goose poop. That Merlin for that. It was a great investment. Also, it causes the water to be more oxegynated, thus it freezes better in winter and in the summer far less algae growth. It has turned out to be a Win/Win situation.
And and this is a big AND, the people who walk and visit the park think it looks fantastic. That was a side effect for us that we love, even though it was really the last reason for doing this.
Oh by the way, we also get these fantastic White Egrets and Pluffers as well as a great variety of birds. The Blue Heron stay here all winter due to our being directly on the Long Island Sound with its warmer and more protected waters and marsh lands. Our town is known for having some of the greatest expanses of Marsh Land in all of the Ct. coastline.

Duddahs, we have a park very much lie that here. For some reason, the fountain no longer work, so the geese have become a problem. Someone said that they trapped one of the geese and relocated it. After that the rest of the geese left, too. But I liked the fountain solution much better. There are tons of turtles in the water, and we love to try to spot them without scaring them into the water.

You know what?
Duddahs has been pretty brain dead about something.
Duddahs has had a set of Antique Owl Figural Andirons and their Tools in his Living Room Fireplace since 1984.
They have amber glass eyes and they are made of Black Wrought Iron. The tools are Brass and they were made by the Bradley and Hubbard company in the first decade of the Twentieth Century

I know.... Isn't it funny how we could have something that we see on a daily basis, then suddenly we just see them again.

That is so cool Duddahs. I went on a big Christmas shopping spree Fri, I think I posted about it somewhere else. Owls were everywhere in the stores-I don't know if they are gettin really popular or if it's just I notice them more because of this thread! Also I just read where one of my favorite Stephen King books, Bag of Bones, is going to be made into a tv miniseries. I remember a pair of owl figurines figured prominently in the story line so am wondereing if they'll include that in the series.

I KNOW what you mean Fangsfan... That was the very reason I started this thread... I keep seeing owls everywhere. It must be a fad for the moment. Right now, I've been eyeballing the flannel night gown that I mentioned before... the light green one with the owls wearing hats or scarves. It's too cute. ..... During my trip out of town over the weekend, we wanted to wait until it was dark before we reached our destination. A place called Eureka Springs. It reminds me so much of the little European towns I grew up with... except no german merchandise to purchase. Well... we wanted to take my daughter to see the town when it was all lit up. Even the local horse drawn carriage was lit up. Then I forgot that since Christmas was now in full season, some of the houses had those types of lights as well. It was beautiful. She even got to see the honest to goodness haunted castle that our local chapter of TAPS got to investigate. I've got to look it up online to see what the actual story was about that. (It's called the Cresant Moon Hotel)Well... what I thought was funny.. this castle, like most castles were made of stone and sitting far up top on a hilltop overlooking a cliffside. Not only that.... there were owls flying all about in this area. I kid you not.

That makes me want to go there Miss C! It sounds beautiful. I still hope to see an owl flying sometime, the only time I've seen them is at a wildlife park. We have a used furniture store at the end of Main Street-I was walking by there and noticed they have wildlife paintings in the windows. Right in the middle is a big brown owl painting-beautifiul.

I saw 2 owls... Aidan brought one home he made in school, and apparently there is one living in the woods by our school. I saw it today, but from a distance. I want to bring my binoculars to get a better look! It was white...but it was too far away to see any markings.

Take them tomorrow if you have any... THese creatures are ones of habit. I'd say we got that nightly flyby for a couple of years. You might just get to have a better look... Still, a white one.. Cool!
...
THose Pillow Pets seem to have taken a life of their own over the past year.. I bought my son a green frog one last year.. a normal sized one... then a few months ago a miniature one to take with him when we go places. It's also a green frog.
Well, suddenly yesterday I found one that looked out of place within the display right next to my department. As usual, my pickyness I have to go straighten it up to have it in proper order. Then I took a look at this one. It's a white owl with tiny little light brown specks flicked throughout. So, when I came home, I've been hinting around that if they can't find the sound track to DH2, she can check out that Pillow Pet. I finally found one that I'm interested in having.
I have so much more to post, but I'll save that for another post.

Today while delivering Christmas cookies I noticed two places with owls-one person had a little owl ornament and one had a painting of two owls on their wall. I guess there are a lot of owl fans around.

I guess there are a lot of owl fans around. Tell me about it... I think it has to be a fad of some sort. I mean, I've gone to the mall several times over the past couple of weeks and I see them everywhere. Owl lamps... Owl shirts, socks, PJ's, gowns. Metalic Owl artwork to hang on the wall. All sorts of jewlry too... necklaces, pins, earrings. This is to the point that I try to make a mental note to remember what new owl items that have not been mentioned here.. by the time I get here at the computer I have a hard time remembering what they are. Here is one.... I have been out purchasing my usual Calendars to hang around the house.. I forgot where the Owl one was at for me to go back and buy.

My sister and I went to lunch with my best friend and her mom today. We do this every year and exchanged gifts-I've known them since I was 4 years old. My friend's mom also gave me a present for Andy-a squeaker because he just loves them. And guess what it was -a stuffed owl squeaker! He has many animals but not an owl-I got such a kick out of it and told her about this site and that I was going to post about it.

Better to tell Duddah to call first before he lands at your house. I mean, your dog Andy will be programed to take off with himand make him squeek! ;D
I'm so glad you posted this here.
Hey ERIN? Did you ever get to see if that really was an owl or not?
