You know those old sayings where your very own Auntie Muriel tells you things..... words of wisdom for luck. I see these as sort of magical and fun. I am guilty of saying some of them. Most of course I don't believe in but still find them very interesting. SO here is a thread for us to post the old wives tales... magical words of wisdom that we had been told from generation to generation. Here is one... "Knock on wood" to keep from jinxing yourself for saying something that you don't want to have to take back later. You know... speaking too soon. Some people say "touch wood" in other parts of the world. Here is another... Find a penny pick it up, then all day you'll have good luck.
but don't pick it up if it's tails up because that is bad luck. Do you guys have any more to post here? I'll add more as I remember them. Have fun. Hmm? Maybe I should have waited to post this next month since it's St. Patrick's Day... The Luck O'the Irish.

If you spill any salt, take a pinch and throw it over your shoulder to keep from having bad luck.

If you happen to notice a storm petrel while visiting Scotland, the legend is that someone will die soon. It is believed the storm petrel is a sailor that died at sea.

Do not open an Umbrella indoors.....
I never really understood this one anyway.. Why would you need an Umbrella indoors... If you need on, what you really need is a Carpenter!

Same thing for a black cat crossing your path. Why would that be something to worry about? Sounds to me something that a muggle heard from a wizard that his witch wife has a black cat and to stay away from her or she'll hex them. ;D
Another... never walk under a ladder.
Really who would? I would be afraid of falling objects if someone is up there.

I was watching Merlin last night and thought Morgana got a cool mirror... sounded familiar to me for some reason. ;D
Oh and now here is the one... Don't break a mirror or you'll have seven years bad luck.

A crow cawing outside your house signals the arrival of a guest.

My husband's mother was very superstitous, and some has rubbed off on him. I always laugh, because, though I do knock on wood, I don't really believe in bad luck. So, when he has the ladder in our house to decorate the tree...I make sure to walk under it (since I know it's safe)...or open a wet umbrella inside, for it to dry...just to see what he'll say I also have always chosen the number 13 whenever I can...NOT at all unlucky to me! LOL Erin

I have a good friend who loves the number 13. She is 89 years young so I guess 13 has doen well for her.
I always heard if your ears are ringing it means someone is talking about you.

If your right palm itches you are going to receive money
But if your left palm itches, you are going to loose or spend money
Personally, if there is money in my wallet, I am going to spend it but if I do not have money in my pocket, I still have credit cards and my debit card

Now she sounds like a lady I'd like to meet. ;D I use this one all of the time.. Just the other night my friend Maryann said her ears have been ringing and my friend Travis told her that means she needs to answer the phone. We both just looked at him like he was nuts. ;D But what I want to ask YOU dear friend... so if people are talking about you and THAT makes your ears ring, then I wonder what you have been going through lately because I have been THINKING about you a lot during this time? ... Duddah, I knew that about your right hand itching. Funny because one day I called someone up to ask them what happens if their left hand itches? They thought I was nuts. They said it means I need to scratch it. Boy this world we live in just has no sense of humor. ;D

LOL... Yeah, mine too. I cracked my skull when I was 14, so the ringing has been there ever since... Also the source of my near constant migranes. BUT the cure is to keep some white noise in the background at all time. Well, that and meds.... and a one tracked mind to find a reason to smile. Let's see.... what other wives tale can I recall right now? Ok... wedding. I need to put my thoughts on wedding stuff for writing purposes SO, here are a couple having to do with that. Something old, something new. Something borrowed, something blue..... good luck. The groom must not see the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding.... bad luck. Ok and after the wedding: Never allow anyone to try on your wedding ring or else you will have marriage problems... or worse... divorce.

We had this one when I was a kid, I don't know if it was specific to just my hometown or not. There is a flying insect called a darning needle. They always said that if you used bad language in front of a darning needle it would sew your mouth up! I'm still nervous even now when I see a darning needle.
