Darning needle? Hmm? Down here we have this insect that resembles a large mosquito, except for the fact there is not the needle part where the Mosquito sucks the blood out of a person. I'd guess it's close to the size of a ping pong ball or a golf ball. It's called a Mosquito Hawk here in Arkansas or a May fly where I grew up in Georgia/Alabama area. I wonder, Fangsfan, if this is the same thing but called different things depending upon where we live in the country? ==== OK here is another one that I can't beleive people do.. They would cross their fingers behind their back when they tell a lie. I guess they think by doing this it makes the lie not really a lie. Go figure?

A Hair of the Dog that bit you. It has become a colloquial expression for ways to ease a hangover from too much alcohol, but in the day it was an actual treatment for rabies. Taking some of the hair from the dog which bit someone and placing it in the wound. Just when I start thinking muggles are smart I discover facts like these which prove me wrong. ;D

OH one I laugh at... The number 13 has so many wives tales about it, that it could make up it's own thread.
But the one I laugh at, is the thirteenth floor. I have actully been in elevators and noticed they don't lable that floor. They skip from the 12th floor to the 14th. They say it's bad luck to have a 13th floor.. that bad things happen more on that floor than any others. So it's better not to have it at all.
Now where is the reasoning of a lable like that? I mean, everyone knows that the 14th floor is really the 13th. Who are they kidding?

If you hear the cry of an owl, someone will die soon. If the owl builds his next nearby, spirits will haunt the area until the owl moves away. I found this one online. Look out Duddah!

Things like finding a four leaf clover or owning a rabbit's foot is good luck.
If you catch a leprechaun he will grant you three wishes... but beware.. if you wish a fourth wish you loose them all.
If you find the end of a rainbow you will find a pot of gold.

If your shoes squeek when you walk, you haven't paid for them. Weird, huh?

It's so good to see you here Nakanj. And I've heard that one before... but then again I'm from the south. Erin... My shoes were squeeking very badly the other night. Now, I'll feel guilty the next time they squeek, wondering if I still owe something just for having them. ;D Here is one... I'm not sure if it's been posted yet. If so, then I'll edit this post if I see it when backreading. If you pull out one gray hair, ten will grow back in it's place. You would think with me calling myself grandpalovegood for so many years, or the things I've been through lately, that I should have earned at least one gray hair by now.

It is a wives tale that your hair and fingernails continue to grow after you die.

You know... I used to believe that one until I watched a show on the Discovery channel... or one of those channels that show documentaries. OK... I'm surprised that no one here has posted this one yet... This was one that was in the books. I was reminded of this one just yesterday when watching one of my Poirot movies. Remember when Trelawney came down to eat Christmas dinner with everyone else? She said 13 people sitting down to eat all together is bad luck... that the first person who gets up to leave will soon die. Yep.... I heard that one again on one of my other obsessions... I just love Poirot.

Here is a good one that I just learned.
Legend has it that each leaf of the clover means:
1st leaf: HOPE 2nd leaf: FAITH 3rd leaf: LOVE 4th leaf: LUCK!!

My mom always told me that a woman should never allow anyone to try on her wedding ring. If she does then her marriage will end... the couple will break up.
