I'm thinking it sounds like Harry Potter. He went to live with THREE Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and cousin Dudley when he was a little over a year old. They actually helped mold his personality and I truly believe helped to give him strength to survive anything. He would have and really in a way did give his life to vanquish He Who Must Not Be Named.

The first part of this definitely fits Voldemort. His father, Tom Riddle, didn't want him His mother Merope was weak and had trouble using her powers as a witch, also lost her powers after her husband left her. The last part I'm not sure about. The only one I can think of that Voldemort loved would possibly be Nagini. He did in a way give his life for her as he put part of his soul inside her as a horcrux. And flying the coop, could that mean she died when Neville killed her? So I'm going to guess Voldemort for now.

Phooey, I was going to say these were all of the people who was there that fateful night when baby Harry met Voldemort at Godric's Hollow. But then there's Slughorn.
Back to the drawing board.

I am on the drawing board as well. At first I had thought this was leaning toward all Slytherins but then as more answers came it didn't fit. Then I thought about them all being in HPB-but I don't think James was in that book, even in a pensieve. Still pondering....

It occurred to me that if it was Lily instead of James the answer could be they were all good at Potions. I assume Tom Riddle was because he seemed to get top grades in everything. Don't remember James ever being that good at Potions though?

Oh I've just had another thought? The answer isn't that they are all only sons is it? Harry, Snape, Voldemort and James all fit and I don't remember anything about Slughorn having siblings either.

Hmmmm, Fawkes is very torn on this dilemma. The actual answer that ties all the riddles and their respective answers together was hidden in one of fangsfan1's theories. Now, how to extract that one person and have the answer correct?
Ah, Fawkes believes that another little riddle is in order.
Alone forevermore to never live with one's own kind. Was there ever such a lovely swimmer from this one so divine. Alas poor swimmer did one fateful night go away. From flower to pet to never more with the professor to stay. By any other name, my scent is still sweet. Cross me though and my abilities were recognized for their yearly prowess and your punishment would then be complete. Yet I was never shown to have used anything of the sorts, just good for the sake of good even with the four trouble making sports.

Hmmm, I need to keep working on this. The four trouble making sports could be the four Maurauders? And this new riddle seems to fit more in with the Potions theory than the other one. I will keep thinking....

Fawkes recognizes another clue may be what you need. Here is one to grow on you much like a weed.
The second of two but the first to go. In love with her were two, one of which only one other did know.
Inside the club of slugs did she reside. The greatest of her age did ole Sluggy relish with pride.
Until that night when she was sent away, the gift to ole Sluggy simply wilted that day.

Snape James Voldy Harry Slughorn
I'm leaning more towards people who were good at the dark arts even if they were born with the talent or studied hard to gain the knowledge.
Wait so it's a female PERSON that is the answer to the riddle. That's interesting.

Until that night when she was sent away, the gift to ole Sluggy simply wilted that day. This sounds like it could be Lily. The second or younger of 2 sisters but the first to die. Snape and James were in love with her but I think only DD knew about Snape. She was in the Slug Club and Slughorn thought she was the best in her year. So if it is Lily, are the five answers all men who were important to Lily in some way? Her husband, her son, her best friend, her favorite teacher and the wizard who killed her.
