I thought it would be fun to post things in Harry Potter history, to line up with the date (or at least approximate time of year) for events from the books. I hope to post on here a few times a week. On this day, December 31, 1926, Tom Marvolo Riddle is born He is born in a Muggle orphanage to a witch mother, Merope Gaunt. His Muggle father, Tom Riddle, has left Merope, after the love potion she had been giving him wore off.

I didn't know either! I was looking up info. Online, and I found it! I researched it until I found the source...and there it was. HBP chapter 13, when DD takes Harry into the orphanage memory. Mrs. Cole mentioned that it was New Year's Eve, and that she had the baby within the hour. It is possible, I suppose that "within the hour" could still be after midnight, and therefore, Jan. 1, but it seemed more likely to be on the eve. They figured out the year usung Nearly Headless Nick's birthday, and the "50 years before" that the Chamber of Secrets was first opened.

YOu know.... I never really thought about this before... that they actually was back in school on this particular day. Can you imagine those people who like to stay up to celebrate the first minute of the new year with a cheer and fireworks. JKR never mentioned that they celebrate the new years at all. But still, if school was back in session on this day, I'd expect if they had celebrated... partyed the night before, then so many students would have felt so worn out during class. I guess in a way, this might be JKR's way of saying the wizarding world never gave much stock in bringing in the new year.  |

In January 1996, in Harry's fifth year, he began occlumency lessons with Professor Snape ("sir")...these did not go very well, as they despised each other.

Around this time, in 1994, in his 3rd year, Harry begins anti-dementor lessons with Prof. Lupin. It doesn't take him long to create an acceptable patronus...though for now, it has no shape...not corporeal.
