Border Collie... aren't those the collies that are sort of medium sized or is it full Lassie size?

Roxy is about the full size but some Boarder Collies can be smaller too.
Poor Roxy is Dumb as wood though. She was abused by her first owners and my Sister rescued her from an abuse shelter.
Poor thing will not let my Dad or my brother any where near her. She runs for her life and hides. She does not seem to mind me or my son though or the twins.
Still the poor thing is a Dogs Dog.. Dumb, dumb, dumb... but sweet as all get out! ;D

I think what worries me most about dogs not being so smart.. Why won't they move when you are trying to drive? I worry so much that I will run over a friends dog. But there are smart dogs who know to move so to protect themself.
My mom did rescue a dog that was thrown from a moving car by the freeway. I've never seen such a skiddish dog before, but we did show respect and did not approach her... eventually after several visits she recognized us and allowed herself to be in the same room with us.
Usually we get our cats from an animal shelter. One thing.. our Hermione never did like other cats not even that day when i first saw her in a room full of kittens.. she's like that today. Mother in law would come to feed the cats and never even see her. She did ask if we had three cats and we said yes... and they are all here just fine. ;D So cats are just as weird.

when i was a teenager, i had a hamster named midnight, she was mostly black with a few white patches. she use to come to me and beg when i held a seed up! also, if i put my hand in her cage, open hand palm up, she'd come over and stand with her front paws on my hand. so cute!!! she was the cleverest hamster i have ever had (and i had a number of them growing up)

JB - I had a couple of gerbils like that. When I put my hand in palm up, they'd cimb right into it! I never fed them from my hands, so they didn't associate them with food (or bite me!). Once, they chewed their way out of their cage, and I put my hand on the floor, and they came running into it!

I never had hamsters or gerbils-but these stories remind me of my Uncle Andy's chipmunks. He had a summer camp when we were kids and he would let my family use it for a week during the summer, it was so much fun. He had two tame chipmunks there that he had named Freddie and Grabbie. They would both come right up to you and eat right out of your hand-I think we still have some pictures somewhere. We loved those chipmunks!

My parents have a chipmunk like that at their house. We were there a few weeks ago, and they forgot to put peanuts out....the chipmunk came up to the sliding door, and started "yelling" for his food!!! LOL They don't know if it's a guy or girl, so they call it G.G.

OK Hamsters... Yeah I had those too when I was a teenager. I just loved the one that I had. There was nothing wrong with her and she was as sweet as can be. My little brother had a cage in his room too. Sometimes we would take them out and play with them together and everything was fine. Well, I remembered all that when my son was a little boy. I don't know how many of you know this or not but he's handicapped. Anyway, it's part of his therapy for us to work on introducing what'a called tactile stimulation. The brain processing what different things are when he touches them. I'm sure we have all seen those touch and feel books we buy for our babies... soft.. smoothe .. scratchy .. rough. Well, petting animals does the same sort of thing. Holding a hamster or a gerbil has a weird feel to it. So I bought him a hamster from our local pet store. I'll never do that again. NEVER. See, when we bought the ONE hamster she was pregnant... which is often normal to have happen. SHe was fine during the pregnancy.. But after she had them, something happened. She had such a huge... I guess they are called litter. Maybe it messed up her head. As the babies grew I could finally count them... Now I knew never to touch the babies and so when cleaning the cage, I left her there with them and only cleaned the other side. But I noticed she quit eating the food I had always given her. Later on, we noticed the numbers of babies was smaller as time went by. Yep she ate all of her babies then when they were gone she starved to death. It took me over ten years before I would get another rodent. Then I find out from a vet that that Hamsters are known to do that... but gerbils do not. So over ten years later... there my daughter was in kindergarden. Her teacher had gotten pregnant and ended up leaving a few weeks before school got out. The class pets were two gerbils. They too had babies and the whole class experienced watching them from day to day. Now the lady who was filling in those last few weeks from school, was moving out of state the day after school got out. She had been trying the whole time to see if any of the parents would want any of the babies or parents. I enquired about the two days before school got out.. She said I could have the cage and everything.. NO ONE took even one... So I could not just leave some.. I took them all. I think there were a mom, dad, and six babies... All I knew as time went by I had to wait to see which were boys from the girls because the mom had a second set of babies after we got them home.. I ended up with 16 gerbils! Only four boys. OK... now for the potter talk... One of the babies was all black and honestly had a greasy look to it.. Pumpkin juice goes to the one who guesses what I named him. ;D He was MINE. Then my daughter chose this one with brown on it's fur and wanted to call it Harry.. but it was a girl and I told her about my friend online who is a girl but goes by the name Harryet. So there they were... Snapey and Harryet. I remember we had the problem with Snapey who liked to escape the cage at night and our cats Hermione and Frostie would NOT eat them but tell on where he was whenever he got out. Yeah, I know my cats language. How I used to pick up Snape when he'd escape was NOT by using my hand... he was a bit distraught for being loose the whole time.. The easy way was to get an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll and allow him to walk up into it. Then I'd take him back to the boy's cage to let him safely come out when he was ready. Yeah.. our cats would lay sleeping up against the cage... It was entertainment for them to watch. The gerbils never was afraid. Even when they did get out... Our cats never would harm them... they would inform me though. Funny... Boots later became an outside cat but never would kill the moles she would catch and bring up on the porch. (back then we lived on a lot that was once an old bean field, turned grass. She had a ball.) But as for the relationship between Snapey and Harryet??? Well, I can't remember what.. but after a couple of years Snapey killed Harryet and that was that. Or was it Harryet killed Snapey? A couple of years earlier I had donated all but four to the pet store. No more gerbils now... this was about six years ago. be right back

back My freak cat Mattie is driving me nuts! ;D This morning, while wandering through my house doing my morning routine... I looked down only to see a tiny tail all by it's self moving on my carpet and nothing else. Turned out my Mattie, got hold of our lizard chameleon that lives in my front garden. Apparently, it must have taken shade in the garage since my cats are all indoors.. Then I find Mattie chasing the rest of the lizard under my Victrola in the living room. Now I have no problems picking up lizards but ones with their tails pulled off freak me out. I ran in there and knowing my hubby was asleep I could get him to sleepwalk in there and throw it outside. That he did. I wonder if he remembers doing that? ;D Still... I"m so proud of my hunter cat. She's so brave.. here I took away her prize. So I gave her a piece of a turkey hot dog as a treat. It's all I could think of.

Gosh Miss Charlotte,
I have to tell you this, half way through the story about the Gerbils, I suddenly got scared and almost did not finish it.
You started saying how your daughters Teacher had become Pregnant and had to leave... I suddenly thought, "Oh NO! The Teacher eats her baby!"
OK, weird, I know. But it was a sudden panic thing that is all.

Cool Albino? I didn't know that about them.
This morning when I was thinking about the story of our gerbils something was not making sense. So when daughter got home I asked her about Snapey and Harryet.. It was in fact Snapey who killed Harryet but they wree both girls. That is why they were in the same cage.
Albino?
That reminds me... Someone earlier mentioned chipmunks. When I lived in Georgia on an army post... there were tons of grey squirrells. I'll have to post about them some time.

Well I love to hear squirrel stories. I had about four or five (right now my brain is still fuzzy so thinking back THAT far is not easy. LOL) but I used to hand feed ours every day after school. Come to think of it I think I do remember you telling your squirrel story.. still.. I say I'm interested in hearing it again.
