Aw... .That naughty boy. That was where he kept his secret stash of beauty potions. He hid them there because they were made from illegal materials. He did not want to be caught cheating either for this was the secret behind his award winning smile. Nope... that guy didn't have an honest bone in his body. Too bad though, Moaning Myrtle found what he left there during one of her trips through the tunnel. Eventually she found a way to use them as well. That was when the gig was up. People noticed then followed her to where these potions were kept. This is also the reason she wails and cries so much. They took them away. As for Lockhart, this was the reason he chose to teach at Hogwarts. So he would be able to spend the whole year emptying the goods from the tunnel. Once he found it was gone he lost his mind. They ended up putting him in St. Mungo's, poor guy.
