Screenplay

I've recently written a screenplay in school for an animated short film that will become my senior project. I am not finished with the story just yet. The copy I will post is the third version, and I will have to work on the dialogue. I cannot post the screenplay now since it is on my Mac and I'm not allowed to connect to the internet with it while at work.

The story is initially set on the moon and deals with alien life forms which sees us as a less complex life form, and is later set on Earth when the life form has to deal with being taken to Earth. The purpose of this story is to turn human preconceptions both historical and contemporary.

EXT. MOON - NIGHT
Earthrise hasn’t happened yet. A bunch of MOON ROCKS lay in the darkness of night.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Daddy, why don’t I have more friends?

MAGMO (V.O.)

Your mother and I decided to home school you.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Why?

MAGMO (V.O.)

Well, honestly children among us is rare. There are too few for a school.

IGNEA (V.O.)

I’m so lonely.

MAGMO (V.O.)

You’ll have more friends soon enough.
EXT. MOON - DAY
The EARTH spins into view over white MOON DUST where several MOON ROCKS lay. EARTH moves through black of SPACE.

IGNEA (V.O.)

It’s beautiful Daddy!

MAGMO (V.O.)

I know.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Is there life down there?

MAGMO (V.O.)

Yes. So say the mountains.

IGNEA (V.O.)

I would love to meet them.

MAGMO (V.O.)

Be careful what you wish for.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Why?

MAGMO (V.O.)

I am ancient. I am apart of the mountains, so I have seen the past, present, and future.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Uh, Okay.

MAGMO (V.O.)

You will be taken from us, because you’re not like us, and down there you will live.

IGNEA (V.O.)

How am I not like you? I’m your daughter.

MAGMO (V.O.)

You are of us, but not like us. You are young. You shine more than the rest of us.

IGNEA (V.O.)

I think I would like the adventure of living down there.

MAGMO (V.O.)

They’re not like us. Not as complex.

IGNEA (V.O.)

How so?

MAGMO (V.O.)

They can’t breathe normal atmosphere. If you take them out of water or air they die.

CUT TO FLASHBACK:

EXT. MOON - DAY
SPACE SUITED figure loads a CONTAINER into MOON LANDER.

IGNEA (V.O.)

That is strange - Are you teasing me again like that time you said cousin Boni was abducted by aliens?

MAGMO (V.O.)

No.

CUT TO FLASHBACK:

EXT. MOON - DAY
Scene from Georges Méliès, A Trip to the Moon, where ADVENTURERS fight ALIENS.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Or like that time you said the alien races fought here?

MAGMO (V.O.)

Not like that either.

CUT TO PRESENT:

EXT. MOON - DAY
EARTH rotates in SPACE moving slowly along SKYLINE.

MAGMO (V.O.)

Do you want to hear something really scary?

IGNEA (V.O.)

Yes.

MAGMO (V.O.)

They eat each other down there for energy.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Oh. What is eat?

MAGMO (V.O.)

Consume.

IGNEA (V.O.)

(gasps)

Why don’t they get energy from the Sun?

MAGMO (V.O.)

They’re a simple life form incapable of solar collecting.

IGNEA (V.O.)

But, don’t they feel love?

MAGMO (V.O.)

(Chuckles)

I don’t know honey, but maybe not. They’re not as complex as us.

CUT TO FLASHBACK:

EXT. SOUTH POLE - DAY
A POLAR BOOT steps into scene amid lots of SNOW, ICE, and ROCKS.

IGNEA (V.O.)

Is there any life like us?

MAGMO (V.O.)

Yes. We’ve even sent some brave adventurers to their south pole, to investigate, but never heard back from them.
IGNEA (V.O.)
Why the south pole?

MAGMO (V.O.)

It seemed the logical choice for life to exist.

CUT TO PRESENT:

EXT. MOON - DAY

IGNEA (V.O.)

This is unbelievable.

MAGMO (V.O.)

You still think I’m teasing you?

IGNEA (V.O.)

Only rocks can feel love?
Spaceman’s foot appears, grabs a rock with pole, and leaves.

MAGMO

Good bye my Dear. I’ll miss you.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:
INT. EARTH - SCIENCE CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
IGNEA a MOON ROCK in GLASS CONTAINER presented to SCIENTISTS in WHITE LAB COATS amid much excitement. Another MOON ROCK is there too.

IGNEA

(sobbing)

I miss Daddy. I want to go home.

BONI

Hello Dear.

IGNEA

(Still sobbing)

Hi?

BONI

I see they’ve taken you too.

IGNEA

Yes. Who are you?

BONI

My name is Boni.

IGNEA

The cousin who was abducted - Never heard of again - Daddy wasn’t teasing?

BONI

(Chuckles)

Yes, that’s me.

IGNEA

(Starts to sob again)

I miss Daddy. I want to go home.

BONI

I understand Dear, but I don’t think that is possible.

IGNEA

But.

BONI

These creatures in white are their species’ mountains.

IGNEA

Why are they in white?

BONI

I think it is to mimic the mountains here, which are often capped in white.

IGNEA

Wow.

BONI

It is their job to observe you. I think your destiny is to observe them, much as I do.

IGNEA

Why do we need two rocks to observe?

BONI

I don’t know Dear. I am not a mountain. I think we all have our own fates, but sometimes they appear similar to others.

FADE TO BLACK.

INT. EARTH - DIFFERENT SCIENCE CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
Different SCIENTISTS, same LAB COATS, A murmur is heard in the room.

IGNEA

All this excitement for me? How exciting!

CUT TO:

INT. EARTH - DIFFERENT SCIENCE CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
Different SCIENTISTS, same LAB COATS. A murmur is heard in the room.

IGNEA

More mountains. Nice!

At least they’re not mountains.

CHRIS a CRYSTAL from Mexico is presented in GLASS CONTAINER next to Ignea. Fewer FAMILIES around.

CHRIS

(Sobs)

No! I want to go home. I miss my family.

IGNEA

Hi.

CHRIS

(Still sobbing)

Hi.

IGNEA

You were taken from your home too.

CHRIS

(Still sobbing)

Yes.

IGNEA

Where are you from?

CHRIS

I’m from a cave in Mexico.

IGNEA

Oh! Daddy taught me about caves.

CHRIS

Where are you from?

IGNEA

The Moon.

CHRIS

What is a moon?

IGNEA

It’s a planet which orbits another planet.

CHRIS

Wow!

IGNEA

Daddy said I would meet more friends...

CHRIS

I miss my family.

IGNEA

I know.

CHRIS

How can I go on without them.

IGNEA

I suppose we’ll have to use our memories of family for strength, and help each other.

FADE OUT.

I am in a class learning how to write a feature length screenplay now, and for last week's homework I was supposed to take of my favorite movies and come up with my own title and log lines for them. A log line is supposed to be one or two sentences telling the audience what the movie is all about when teamed up with a winning title. I could not think of five of my favorite movies, because it would be too one dimensional. I like science fiction and fantasy films. A log line is supposed to hint at irony, be true for the entire scope of the film, hint to the audience how much it wil cost, (the audience that will buy the screenplay) and when teamed up with a winning title make an audience want to see it. Here are my five. I added the tag line for the movie if it had one and then added one of my own. It should show real title, real log line, and real tag line if there is one, and then mine in the same order. I ried.

1. Serenity
The crew of the ship Serenity tries to evade an assassin sent to recapture one of their number who is telepathic.

The future is worth fighting for

Reaver Boat Queen
A Crew of Desperate Outlaws must reveal to the populace that one nightmare is real, and it is the fault of the Government.

Sometimes you have to be the bad guy

2. The Avengers
Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army.

Avengers Assemble
The World needs its mightiest heroes with egos as ample as their powers to work together and save the planet.

3. Pulp Fiction
The lives of two mob hit men, a boxer, a gangster's wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.

4. The American
An assassin hides out in Italy for one last assignment.

This week I have to provide a winning title and log line for my own screenplay. This was tough, because last week I did not have any ideas for a screenplay, but here goes.

So, which did you decide to go with. I found many of them to be compelling and was hoping to hear which you decided to run with.

I am thinking up my own story with meaning. I created a fantasy story set in a pirate/western world where everyone, (except the natives) travel by land ships like schooners, cutters, and clippers, but it seems too complex for a first effort. My story did have meaning in that it was about adapting and accepting differences in others, but again it was too complex. I am trying to think of a story following a single thred similar to Little Miss Sunshine. I want it to mean something. Right now I am posulating a story about a man who quits everything to follow his dreams.

I LOVED it! Really. I wish I poked my head in here earlier. I love the different style of writing. Honestly, I've been dallying around a bit with writing. Normally, I like stuff like Tolkien... he paints a picture where you see everything from the way he saw it. Over time, I've noticed not only my writing style has changed, but the way I post. I'm finding myself more clipped. I have thought long and hard about writing in a style where I touch on the setting, then basically go on dialogue... allow the conversation to tell the actual story. I thought this was just something in my head.. but here it is.. YOU have this style and you say it's a form of a screen play? I've never really read one before and I like it. You allow the reader to automatically fill in the background while you simply tell the story. Well, a place that is already familiar to the reader, like the moon, does not need too much discription and is perfect. And this story about the moon rock... well, I hope you don't take it wrong, but I think it's cute. Yeah... throw tomatoes at me if you wish. Please do not take it as an insult but a complement that I think true.

OK... honestly? I"m already interested in your story. I love stories out at sea... and of course I'm curious as to what the 'forgotten evil' might be. I hope this is the responce you were looking for from a reader.

I understand how it is.. to have a story so complex in your head that it feels so overwhelming to get it out on paper. I have MANY harry potter storylines in my head like that. I want to get them out so badly, but the effort would me me going silent for far too long to most of my friends.

I've never seen Little Miss Sunshine. I know there was a little girl and her family going on a trip of some sort. But not much more than that.

Your story about a man starting over to follow his dreams sounds interesting. So much could go on with that one. Let us know what you have decided on once you do.
