Hagrid stopped laughing and turned around so he couldn't see Aberforth. When he finished changing, he followed Abe into the Room of Requirement.
The room had shrunk since the last time he'd been in it. Despite it's size everything still looked the same; the large fireplace was still roaring and it's cathedral-like arches still swung from pillar to pillar. Hagrid began to make his way over to a small cabinet in one of the corners of the room.
"This should be the right one" He said as he opened the oak door of the cabinet and stuck his over-sized hand inside. "Aha! Abe look at this!" He pulled out a brown box of pastries of some sort and ran over to Abeforth, who was at the portrait of his sister.
"Rock Cakes, Abe! I used ter store them here in case I got hungry durin' a stroll around the school. Go ahead take one, they're home-made!" Hagrid said as he offered a cake to Aberforth.
He looked around the portrait of Aberforth's sister, which would get them safely back to the Inn, and chuckled to himself.
"I hope I can fit through here, Abe!"

The portrait that hung high upon the wall opened to reveal a darkened tunnel.
"Git away from me with those nasty things, you! Merlin only knows how long they have been holed up here and what the heck haz bin crawllin all over em!"
Aberforth moved a small ladder that lay on its side at against the wall. He carefully opened it up and moved it just under the passageway opening.
"Come on you, we hafta git ourselves back to the Inn and make sure that those Death Eaters havin busted the place up for good."
As Abe took to the spindle rungs of the step ladder and began his ascent he turned towards Hagrid who he could see was still preoccupied with those stale rock cakes.
"Get on wif it already. I haz enough food at tha Inn to feed an army "o" giants. Wheeze got some straightnin outa be gettin to. Here gimme yah hand and ah'll help yer carcuss up this here ladder."
Abe took another look back down at the spindly rungs and quickly changed his mind... He produced his wand from deep within his dark robes.
"Wingardium Leviosa"

Hagrid looked from his rock cakes to Aberforth. "Good thinkin' there Abe." As he was gently lifted off the ground Abeforth's levitation charm, Hagrid couldn't help letting out a small chuckle or two.
"Steady now.... Steady.... Perfect" Hagrid felt his feet touch down on the stone path of the tunnel and turned to Abe. "Thanks Abe, that's some mighty good wandwork I say! We better get going though. Lead the way Abe!"
They began making their way down the dimly lit tunnel, step by step. After a good ten minutes of walking, they arrived at the other end. "Whew! Finally. I'll get this Abe" He made his way past Aberforth and gently removed the portrait of Ariana and placed it on the ground.
He quickly slid down off the tunnel's path and looked around the Inn, then back at Aberfoth. "Abe, somethin' looks a bit different here."

Aberforth stuck his head through the portrait hole and let out an audible gasp!
"Wah the? Yer kiddin Ole Abe right?"
What was presented to Aberforth was the sight of the Hogshead Tavern dining room to be chared black and smoldering piles of what was once his furniture in heaps upon the burnt flooring of the Inn.
"Mah goats! Wherz mah goats?" Abeforth shouted out.
With a ringing of several small hammered bells, a group of small goats walked up to look at Aberforth and Hagrid as the two began to decend into the remains of the Inns dining room.
"Baaahhhhhh! Baaaaaahhhhh! BaaaaaaaaaHHHHHHHH!" bleated the goats.
It was obvious to Aberforth that they were under a great deal of stress but something caught his eye over in the corner of what once was the bar area of the Inn.
There laying on the burnt floor was a small young goat, singed and breathing very heavily. A house elf was wiping down the little one with a soft cloth that was being repeatedly dipped into a bucket of water.
"Master Abe, he will live won't he?" cried out the little house elf.
Aberforth ran to the two and picked up the little goat but in his hurry he had not even noticed that the house elf also had been severely injured. His ears and hands and feet were burnt very badly. He gave out a little whimpered cry as the baby goat was wrenched from his arms.
The house elf chocked back the pain and spoke once more, "I tried, I tried, I tried to keep him from harm. As the flames grew out of control, I saw this little one cornered by the fires. He could not get free, so ahz ran through the fire and held him high above my head until the fires had burnt out this area of the inn. I am so sorry, I could hold him no more Master Abe, I tried but he just was too scared and tried to break free. Took all I could muster to keep the little one from being burnt alive Master Abe..."
Aberforth looked down now at the tiny house elf. He was in such bad shape but he cringed and awaited punishment for allowing the baby goat to be harmed at all.
"Hagrid, take this baby goat outside to his mother please and tend to his wounds. I need to make this here elf as safe as I can."
Aberforth had a small tear rolling down his cheek as he handed the little goat over to Hagrid. Again Aberforth bent low and very gently picked up the little house elf and cradled him in his arms as he walked carefully through the remains and rubbish that once was his dining room.
"Ahm so sorry little one. I know you tried your best. It was me, my fault. I shoulda neva left yer to defend tha place all byze yer selves.."

Hagrid stood in awe at what he saw.
The dining room of his favourite Inn looked as though someone had set off some Fiendfyre inside it. He stepped down onto the burnt floor, which creaked loudly under his weight, and saw that nearly everything inside it had been burned or charred. He couldn't believe what had happened to the Inn.
He heard Aberforth calling him, bringing him back to reality. He made his way over to him and saw that he was holding an injured baby goat. A sobbing house-elf stood beside him.
"Don't worry Abe, I'll take care of this little guy" he said to Aberforth in a serious tone as he took the little goat from Abe's hands. "I've got something that'll help heal his burns."
The little goat was so small that it could barely be seen in Hagrid's enourmous hands. He walked over to the side-door beside the bar, opened it slowly, and walked outside into the alley beside the bar.
The long alley was dimly lit and eerie to say the least. At the back of it were piles of hay with goats amongst it. He made his way over to the other goats and placed the little goat onto a soft pile of hay.
"Don't worry little guy. Hagrid's gunna help you now" Hagrid unbuttoned his moleskin coat and began searching frantically. A few seconds later, he pulled out a dusty old vial filled with a thick orange paste.
"This stuff'll help yer out a lot, little guy. It's straight from Madame Pomfery's private storeroom." He opened the vial and slowly poured the thick paste onto his hand and rubbed it on the little goat's burns. It winced slightly in pain, but relaxed a little bit as the paste began to start working.
"There yer go, little guy" Hagrid said as capped the vial and put it back into his coat. "Now stay put while I fetch yer some water."
He got up from the hay and made his way back into the Inn. When he reached the dining room he hollered over to Aberforth "How's the little elf holding up there, Abe?"

Aberforth walks towards the stunned Hagrid, tears streaming down his age weathered face.
Never before has Abe given the impression that he was anything less than a rough and grumpy curmudgeon wizard. This time his feelings had come to the surface and broken free in torrents of tears and anguish.
"He's gone, poor little thing did not have a chance. He gave o imself fer the life o tha baby goat." "Sniff, sniff."
Abe walked slowly towards Hagrid, shuffling his feet in utter dejected defeat.
The body of the House Elf lay limply across Aberforths cradled arms. Its arms hanging and moving slightly with each step as its head was still pressed firmly against Abes shoulder and beard. Its eyes close and its scorched ears hung limp.
Aberforth let out an animal like yell. His scream could be heard reverberating throughout the streets and buildings of Hogsmeade.
As Abe walked past Hagrid, it was clear that his devastated emotions were now turning into a rage of bitter anger.
"Damn them! Damn them all! If it ahz tha lass thing ahz'll do, ah'll track each en everyone o them and kill em meself!"
Abe walked into the alley way behind the remains of his Inn and approached the spot where Hagrid had placed the baby goat, which was showing signs of healing. Its bleating was evident that it was well on its way to a full recovery thanks to Hagrids attentions and Madam Pomfrey's lotion.
"Here, you deserve this. You gave so much for this little one's life that you were willin ter give yer own."
Aberforth lay the body of the House Elf down on the soft straw beside the baby goat and stepped back..
The baby goat wrenched it's head toward the limp body of the Elf and with a tiny flick, it's tongue shot out and licked the side of the House Elf's face as gently as the dew drops on a spring blossom.
There was nothing more that could be done other than to bury the body of the little House Elf. Abe wished for the baby goat to be able to say goodby and give thanks to it for giving the gift of life.
Abe picked up the tiny lifeless body which he now swaddled in a soft white cloth that he had created from thin air. It's face was gently covered and the body wrapped as if an infant on a cool night.
Abe gave Hagrid a knowing look with his tear filled eyes, then he turned with the House Elf in his arms and proceeded to walk down the alley way into the darkness and shadows of night.

"I'm sorry Abe"
Tears began to roll down Hagrid's cheeks. He couldn't believe that the poor house elf didn't make it. Within seconds, he began to sob out loud. He took out a large handkerchief from his coat to wipe his tears, but it was no use.
As Aberforth walked by him, he couldn't help but feel sorry for his poor old friend. He knew how much his house elves had meant to him, even though he didn't show it all the time. Without hesitation, he followed his friend out the backdoor.
He watched Aberforth put the house elf's body on the hay beside the baby goat. The sight of both of the little guys, caused more tears to streak down Hagrid's face. He quickly turned to Abe, as he was picking up the elf's lifeless body.
"Abe don't go. It's too dangerous" Hagrid said to him through sobs, as he began to walk down the alley way. "Who know's what could be there."
Hagrid could see the determination in Aberforth's eyes and knew right away that he wouldn't be able to persuade his friend. He followed his friend, but couldn't get that eerie feeling out of his mind.
As they made their way to the front of the alley, Hagrid cautiously looked around. The street was deserted and silent, as usual, but seemed even more on this night. This eased Hagrid's mind slightly, but he still kept a firm grip on his umbrella hidden within his coat.

Abe's face was streaked with bits of soot from the remains of his Tavern's main room.
As he walked down the now deserted alley way, he was joined by Hagrid. The tiny body of the deceased House Elf laying limply across Abe's outstretched arms. His wand grasped tightly in his right hand all the more and with the very end of the tip giving off a guiding beam of light. The Lumos spell was of the utmost use at the moment as there was not a star in the sky and the moon was obscured by cloud cover.
The two friends approached a small fenced in area of grass. Small headstones jutted out of the ground with some regularity. They had reached their destination, the Hogsmeade Wizarding Cemetery with its Iron Gates and stone fenced wall were impeccably manicured in a town that was somewhat rough hewn in its appearance.
A swish and a flick of Aberforths wand and a small unoccupied spot way back in the corner of the plot of land revealed a small granite opening.
Aberforth approached it as calmly as he could. He choked back a few uprising fits of tears and a hiccup or two. As he neared the small opening a little bit of moonlight had just broken free of its blanketed cloud cover and a pathway was revealed. Well worn and clearly well marked.
Aberforth turned to Hagrid and finally broke the silence.
"Tis tha House Elf catacombs. Been here for as long as Hogwarts has bin, yah know?" Abe sniffled out.
Of course Hagrid knew of the place where they stood. There had been the occasional ancient House Elf from the Kitchens of Hogwarts who would happily pass in their sleep after a full day of cooking and scrubbing of the castle.
Aberforth lay the tiny sheet covered body of the House Elf upon a small tablet that led down to the entrance of the catacombs. The body body floated just above the stone and then upon its own powers slowly lowered itself into the opening in the ground.
A small stone door slid over the opening and grass began to cover it once more. In but a brief moment the spot where the House Elf had been entombed was covered in a rich blanket of fine green grass. Tiny blue and purple Violets and Crocus sprouted up over the area which was once the opening to the catacomb.
Abe turned to Hagrid, sniffed deeply and spoke once more. "I'll kill em'. Rip em apart wit mah own bare hans, ah will. Yah don hav ter come wiv meh Hagrid, buh ah haz ta find Kingsley an find out wha happened for sure."
He turned on his heals and with great determination in his step walked briskly out of the Cemetary and through the Iron Gates. The lean that his body produced toward the direction he walked was more of a warning of things to come than anything else..
"Mess with a Dumbledore will ya filthy freaks? Ah'll fix yer broomsticks and shove em where the sun don' shine ah will." Aberforths voice was not masked by an kind of nicety or sorrow any longer. There was pure venom in his words.
Aberforth continued to walk very quickly toward the center of High Street. He raised his wand toward the sky and muttered a few words. A brilliant light burst from the tip of his wand the clouds above the town of Hogsmeade were set ablaze and flooded with pure white light.
It looked as if it were High Noon other than being shortly after midnight.. Roosters could be heard crowing all across the countryside. Slamming of once closed shutters on the sleepy structures that made up Hogsmeade reverberated across the airway.

The grounds of Hogwarts were calm and still. Insects were nowhere to be found, creatures were fast asleep; even the Whomping Willow appeared to be in a frozen state.
Suddenly a noise booms from the castle doors. They open, revealing a tall, dark man, who begins to sprint frantically down the path that leads to the Gates of Hogwarts.
The man appears determined to get to a place rather quickly. He wears a face that says some has gone horribly wrong, fast. As he approaches the Gates, he takes out his wand and with a flick, the gates burst open. He runs past the gates and POP! The man is gone.
POP! Kingsley appears across the street of The Hogs Head Inn. As he hurries across the street, he realizes that he is too late. A strong burning smell greets him and as he opens the front door, a cloud of smoke rushes by him.
A grim look of devastation streaks itself across Kingsley face at the sight of the inn. He makes his way into the dining room of the inn, which appears to be burnt the most.
"Aberfoth and Hag--ARGH!" Kingsley begins to speak but is suddenly caught off-guard and thrown back by a flash of bright light coming from outside.
He quickly gets up off the floor and draws his wand and looks around with a sudden alertness. In the back of his mind, he suspects the Death Eaters have returned, but continues to make his way to the front door of the Inn and exits outside.
A white light filled the entire sky as if a new light source similar to the Sun was placed there. While still alert, Kingsley waves his wand and the source of the light is instantly known. He begins to run towards the source, with his wand high up in the air.
He is now running once again as he approaches the centre of High Street. He spots a man with his wand high up in the air, and knows he has found the caster. He makes his way closer to the man and recognizes him.
"Aberforth!" Kingsley's deep voiced boomed in a serious tone as he made his way towards him. When he arrives beside Aberforth, Kingsley begins to speak in a hurried and out-of-breath tone.
"Abe" he pants, "Our source close to Voldermort has defected. The attack on Hogwarts was a trick. Our source told us that Hogwarts was to be targeted in an attempt to draw Aurors to it and away from Hogsmeade. Remus informed me of this just minutes ago and I tried to get to your inn as fast as I could, but I was too late. I'm sorry Abe"

On the outskirts of Hogsmeade stood an ancient structure. A large stone chimney jut from the center of its roof. Billowing smoke rose in large wafts from its uppermost opening and drifted across the darkened evening sky.
The sound of metal upon metal could be heard being hammered in slow and deliberate cadence.
Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, HISSSSSSSSSS! Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, HISSSSSSSSS!
Deep within the structure with it's straw strewn stone floor and sparse physical appointments could barely be made out in a silhouette against a huge fire that rose from a vast pot of molten metal.
A Dragon could be seen in the corner of the far end of the room, breathing fire in regular intervals beneath the massive cauldron of liquid metal.
The shadowed figure turned once more and now could be seen to raise a large hammer just before it swung with mighty force and the sparks that shot out from the head of the hammer and the glowing red hot elongated object that lay upon a iron anvil.
Yet an even smaller figure with long tongs grasped tightly in its hide covered hands held the elongated object as it was struck and as the spark once again flew like tiny stars in a darkened nights sky.
Yells of Gibberish could be heard being uttered but what was being conveyed could only be considered conjecture.
The figure once again raised the hammer high into the air and another mighty blow was administered to the elongated object.
The smaller figure could be seen now lifting the object off the anvil and plunging it into a large wooden barrel with several metal straps around its top, middle and bottom.
HISSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
Steam rose from the watery surface of the barrels contents.

*POP*
Aberforth appeared in the alleyway behind the Hogsmeade Tavern. The sounds of many goat bells clanging as a small herd of his precious friends rushed to greet him.
"Back! BACK! No time for games you lot, things are getting well outta hand, and quick!"
Abe stumbled his way through the darkened alley until he was once again on the rear threshold of his beloved tavern. He had never before felt as secure yet just as rattled as he had been since the fateful afternoon battle with Gellert Grindlewald.. Ariana, his only sister had been killed that day.
Without further ado, Abe slammed the wooden door open and hurried up the back stairs to the fourth floor of the dirty establishment.
Cobwebs being brushed aside as snores of dwarfed Acromantula were cast away with the remains of their woven traps. Thuds and screeches of terror echoed through the hallway leading to a darkened room at the far end of the corridor.
Aberforth stomped his way into the room, swish and flicked his wand armed right hand, a torch in the very far corner of the room came to life. Flickering airy light cast shadows of objects long since discarded and stored for lack of need and damage.

Hagrid found himself alone on the dark backroads of Hogsmeade, walking with his head hung low, his body nervously tense and stiff. So much had happened in the last twenty-four hours that he didn't know whether to feel scared, sad, or both.
Hogsmeade wasn't safe at the moment and Hagid knew that all too well. The entire village was silent in an eerie way unbeknownst to him, as if the slightest fidget or noise would set off a series of horrible events. He tried to stay on the down low whilst walking, ducking into the odd alleyway, staying in the shadows of buildings, all to give him the false sense of security he so dearly wanted to feel at the moment. He knew that this was all an illusion however, it's not to common to find another half-giant wandering the streets of Hogsmeade.
A quick right turn into a small alleyway brought Hagrid to his destination, the Hog's Head, the place where it all started, and ended for some, just a little while ago. Suddenly a memory pops into his head. An oversized teenager, no family, no friends, no place to stay, walks into a dingy inn, spots an older barman whom he quickly befriends in a friendship that would continue even to this day.
Hagrid silently unfastens the latch on the back door of the inn and slowly turns the knob, hoping that despite its old age, it wouldn't creak. With luck on his side, the knob remains silent as he pushes the door open, trying to make as little noise as possible and not wake the goats. After closing the door, he breathes a sign of relief and relaxes slightly. "Safer in here than out there" he says to himself. He'd made it. With a quick turn on his heels, he spots an old staircase and slowly makes his way up it.
"Fourth floor, end of the corridor" Hagrid thinks to himself, trying to remember what Aberforth told him. He'd never been to this part of the inn before. A few steps later, he arrives at the fourth floor landing and is reassured by the sight of a bright light coming from the end of the hall.
"Abe!" Hagrid says in a yelled whisper as he makes his way towards the old man standing in the frame of the doorway.
He enters the room, then quickly turns to Aberforth. "What is this place?"

"Whah the?" shouts Aberforth, turning with a sudden jerk.
"Hagrid you oaf, don't you know it's bad form to sneak up on a wizard? In these times, with all that's going on rown here, I could have just as easily blown your head off with a swish and not even a flick!"
"Now that you're here and I've lost a decade off my life, c'mon and give a hand here. This darned thing weighs a ton."
Rustling through the pile of discarded junk that fills the trunk, Abes hand finally hits the prize he seeks.
"Righ here big boy, gives us a hand."
Aberforth motions to the half giant, urging him to use his brute force on the tiny object that appears to the normal wizard to weigh no more than a pound or two. Little did Hagrid know but it weighed nearly a quarter ton!
Four inches across and perfectly smooth, shiny and gleaming. Seemingly a low light emitted from inside the solid object. To Aberforth it looked nothing different than any other river rock stone, tumbler over the years, smooth and polished.
As Abe reached toward the object, it began to gleam, a burst of brilliant light shot from it, filling the attic room. Cobwebs that had been created were instantly evaporated, even the dust that covered nearly everything in sight would disapeer. The room suddenly empty of all contents, that is everything except Aberforth, Hagrid and the bizarre little river rock object.

"Sorry about that Abe" Hagrid says as he bends over to lift the small stone-like object for Aberfoth. With a little bit more effort than he anticipated, Hagrid heaves, pulls the object up, and holds it in front of Abe, apparently surprised that such a small thing could weight so much.
"Merlin's beard Abe, what's thing made--Argh!" Hagrid is suddenly blinded by a bright light and takes a few steps back, shaking the ground beneath him. He takes one hand off the stone to cover his eyes but makes sure not to loosen his grip on the stone. "What ar' yer doin' Abe!"
After regaining his balance again, Hagrid takes his hand away from his eyes and is shocked by what he sees. Before Abeforth and himself is empty whiteness; everywhere he looked he saw white, no matter where he looked he saw no one or nothing else, just Abe, himself, and the stone which he still held. He looked down to his large feet and saw that he was standing on whiteness too.
Hagrid was both in awe and in angst. He had never seen anything like it in his life and it made him more worried than he already was. As questions began to fill him mind, he turned to Abe, hoping for answers.
"I've seen some crazy things before, but this here tops them all, Abe! What happened to us? Where's the Inn?"

"Blasted all to Merlin Hagrid! Must be gettin too old to remember the ramifications of these Goblin made pieces of magic. Yeah seez, been sittin in that trunk for so long, must ave' forgotten bout the cloaking charm that protects it."
I reach into my breast pocket and withdraw my ion worn wand.
Swish, Flick, POP!
A shadowy effect surrounds to two. Ghostlike and ethereal, the flooring is nearly transparent and the night time sky shines through the roof's thatch.
"We have to find a particular odd fella there Hagrid. He is not the friendliest of creatures, might have to come callin with a sort of peace offering, yeah know, kinda like a bribe of sorts.
See, he's gotten himself thrown out of the Goblin community decades ago. Not sure exactly what he did but it had something to do with a Bar Wench and a sheep. Tellin you between juss the two of us, I don't see nothin wrong with a little company from sheep or goats. They are more reliable an less talkative than most Wizards and Witches. Yep, better company and smell a darn bit better then some too!"
With a waive of his wand, the Hogs Head Inn comes back into focus, splinters, spiderwebs, dust and all.

Hagrid watches the Inn return around him, still holding the majestic stone in his hands as darkness falls again. "A goblin you say? Well yer've brought the right fella then Abe. Golbins have always takin a liking to this here Half-Giant."
He felt a little reluctant at first to be heading back outside, but knew going with Abe was probably the safest bet. He looks back at his old freind, "Have yer' any idear where this Goblin fella of yours might be? I don't recall seeing too many of 'em round these parts."
Transferring the stone to one hand and with the other fastening his large moleskin coat, Hagrid looks back to Abe. "We better get going then"
Just as Hagrid is about to set off for the door of the room he looks back down at the stone, still clutched in his large hands.
"I'm guessing this stone-thing is your peace-offering?" He says as a faint boom in the night catches him off guard.

He's one of them Blacksmithin type uh Goblin. See, that little bit o goblin majic you have there in yer hand, well, see that's the thing that they make their weapons with an all. Worth more an gold ter them creatures it is."
Now, let's git ourselves a few pint put down and see iffin we can't git oner mah goats to sniff the little thing outa his hiding. It ain't gonna be easy and they have a smell about em they'll make even you gag on tha fumes."
As the hallway begins to come back into focus and the rickety stairs form, Aberforth shuffles his feet as he walks past the half giant standing in the doorway.
