I've always loved those old fashioned glass ornaments. They remind me of when I was little. They were so thin and delicate. I think we even had a couple of those birds with the feathers for their tails but they were much smaller. Now a days, you mostly find the birds that are Styrofoam with feathers glued to them with the same clips on their feet. Years ago, I had a bluejay and a couple of smaller red type birds (not cardinals) that I kept in my living room year round just for the smile it brought my face to see them there.
I never knew they were supposed to be part of a tradition that you described. That's so cool and beautiful. Thanks

Miss Charlotte, the funny thing is almost all of Duddahs glass birds are German made. Bet this is why you saw them while growing up.

Yeah, it probably is. That's the funny thing, so many things I just thought everyone did everywhere. I had no idea that it had more to do with the tradition of the country I was living in, that it's barely known here in the United States.
I mean, when I lived in the Netherlands (I was there when I was 3-6 years old.) Their Santa Claus didn't have reigndeer, but white horses pulling his sleigh. ALSO, he had a companion who rode with him called Black Pete. HE was the one who filled the children's SHOES (when the kids left them outside on their front doorstep) with coal or switches for kindling if they were naughty that year. A lot of American's didn't understand what the "coal" thing was about. But if the child was good, then SinterKlaas or something like that... Saint Nicholas would leave sweets, nuts, fruit in their shoes placed outside. OH and presents ON the candle lit trees. Funny too... Saint Nicholas dressed more like Dumbledore than OUR Santa.
It's so funny how before electricity they actually placed white candles ON the Christmas trees. You would not believe how many Germans would put up their Christmas tree's out on their balcony's and decorate them with white candles.
This year, I was looking for a large Christmas bag to place a couple of AJ's presents in that were much too large and oddly shaped to put in a box or just wrap in paper. The ONLY Christmas bag I could find that day at the store was a plastic sack that said COAL on it. LOL! I had to laugh and said out loud, AJ you would have to be different. He's been great this year though.
...
Those birds were far back in my memory too. In the Netherlands (Holland) we did buy a box of those wonderful glass ornaments. Each were wrapped in white tissue paper; and there were a couple of silver colored birds with the tail feathers and clippy's for clipping on the tree. So cool. They were also there when I lived in Darmstadt Germany when I was 8-11 years old.

Hey, a driveway that also leads to the back. That's cool. Will you be paving it soon? Wait... I probably need to go read what's been posted at the Head Table since my last peek in.

Gee Erin, that was one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for ole Duddahs.
This truly touches home because the Memorial Fund put up by the United States Figure Skating Association was done so on behalf of those who lost their lives in the 1961 plane crash in Brussels on their way to the World Championships.
The entire USA Figure Skating Team was lost as well as many of their families and most of the top coaches in the United States. It was due to the sudden vacuum and dearth of high quality coaching here in the USA that they brought to the United States some of the top coaches we had over the past half century. Along with this need for great coaches, Maribel's recently retired student, Frank Carroll decided to stop show skating and took over many of the competitors that Maribel Vinson Owen (her husband Guy Owen was not on the plane with her and their two daughters due to coaching needs at home).
From this small handful of skaters lost have come Millions of dollars in donations to the Memorial Fund which has been passed on to worthy and needy skaters for generations now. Duddahs is humbled to have taken part in the Memorial Fund as well as having skated in their exhibitions back in the 70's and 80's as well as having had a number of Duddahs students honored to represent the Memorial Fund during their financial drives exhibitions.
Again, thank you very much.

Wow. That's impressive. It's also amazing the influence that a person can have that will affect the lives of so many people so deeply.
Thanks Erin and Duddahs for sharing your posts.
